A $60 million gated estate is to be built on Port Macquarie’s south-western fringe, under plans revealed yesterday.
Newport Village will be a 160-site manufactured housing estate for residents older than 50.
It will span seven hectares off Lincoln Rd, pending Port Macquarie-Hastings Council approval.
The site of a former nursery, Lincoln Greenery, forms part of the proposal.
Husband-and-wife team Les and Pam Albutt operated the popular nursery for 14 years until an offer from developers triggered their decision to close in early March.
Developer Newport Property Group believes the area and its tradespeople will benefit from the village.
Its director, Greg Gill, said there were “retirees going up and down the coast looking for a retirement destination”.
“We will be catching our share of that market and draw more people and more money to the local area,” he said.
Ballina company Norfolk Homes would build the residences.
A $450,000 development application for part of the development outlines facilities for the Lincoln Greenery site, including a bowling green, swimming pool and community centre.
Mr Gill said residents would have remote-control access to a security gate at the village’s front entrance. “The housing will be modern, cement-rendered manufactured homes and the lifestyle will provide facilities like a clubhouse, resort-style swimming pool, bowling green and possibly other facilities to suit the over 50s lifestyle,” he said.
Newport Property Group owns a residential resort, Bremer Waters, for the over 50s set on 12ha at Ipswich in south-east Queensland.
Mr Gill said the company, an experienced development group, would bring ideas from Bremer Waters to Port Macquarie.
Newport Village already has about 18 houses, a display home and sales office.
