THE NSW Teachers Federation met with Hastings principals and teachers in the lead-up to Saturday’s by-election.
Acting president Bob Lipscombe was in town yesterday to raise awareness of public education as an issue for voters.
While here, Mr Lipscombe also talked with people about the need for investment in government schools.
The federation’s regional organiser, Wayne Webber, said it was important for voters to know about the issues facing the public education system.
“The federation has developed a plan to properly fund and staff public schools,” he said.
“Education economist Adam Rorris revealed investment for buildings and facilities in Australian public schools falls short by about $2 billion annually when compared with the level of investment in private schools.”
Mr Webber said the federation did not support, in particular, any one of the 11 candidates in the race for the state seat of Port Macquarie.
But, he added, The Greens were strong supporters of public education.
“It seems most of the independent candidates also support public education and Leslie Williams (The Nationals) has mentioned it as an issue on her agenda.”
