MORE than 23,000 speeding fines have been dished out to Mid-North Coast motorists in the past three years.
Although the fines keep increasing in dollar value it has not been enough to make drivers slow down.
The number of people fined within the Mid-North Coast Local Area Command, which stretches from Laurieton south of Port Macquarie to Nambucca Heads in the north, has remained fairly constant since 2005.
Mid-North Coast traffic supervisor Sergeant John Carrero said people did not understand the risk of driving too quickly.
“People still take the risk and don’t think going 15 to 20kms over the speed limit is a big risk,” the 52-year-old officer said.
“I think fines do help slow drivers down especially as they are quite hefty these days and the loss of demerit points help as well.”
There are nine highway patrol officers stationed in Port Macquarie and general duty officers also can issue a speeding fine.
According to police there can be up 25 officers on the Mid-North Coast ready to issue a speeding fine at any given time.
As long as people continue to take risks Sgt Carrero believes there will be speeding fines.
“If we manage to avoid a fatality in our local area then we have done our job regardless of the amount of traffic infringements issued,” he said.
“It is human nature to take risks, but we’ll always keep trying to reduce the amount of people speeding on our roads.”
